Neo-Prog band Comedy Of Errors

Post by GaetanL » Sun Nov 21, 2021 9:43 pm

In all the discussions we had about neo-prog, the band Comedy Of Errors has never been mentioned.

My favorite album from them is "Fanfare & Fantasy" (2013)

Truly excellent!

You are welcome Larry! This is also the kind of Neo-Prog I'm looking for... A classic neo-prog sound I would say...

Apparently - the ones to get from what I'm reading is this one, and Spirit .......... those are the two that people list as their best. Luckily, these are streaming while I hunt down Fanfare .......

To this point this is very personal I guess. But I would choose the album "Disobey" over "Spirit". "Disobey" is their first full length album released in 2011. I have all four full length CD from them. They also released a mini album on vinyl self titled in 1986. A re-release on CD of this exists but it's not worth it IMO for many reasons (audio quality, song missing, etc). On the album "Disobey" you will get in part some reworked composition they done in 80s.

So I streamed Fanfare & Fantasy, and I thought it was a little too on the light side, even for me ........ it certainly has that 90's style classic Neo-Prog sound, but a little too much if that makes sense .........

Then I streamed Spirit, and thought that this was more exciting and more dramatic than Fanfare........I'll go back and do both again, but at first listen, Spirit wins out for now.......

Larry, I don't get it when you say that. There are plenty of dynamic passages in that album. There is also a light side. This is a mix of both.
For example in the song "The Cause":

Heavier than that this is called prog metal...

My personal evaluation of the albums:
Disobey (2011): Excellent
Fanfare & Fantasy (2013): Essential
Spirit (2015): Very good
House Of The Mind (2017): Very good

***Gaetan - I will go back and check all of this again in the near future.... I just felt that Spirit felt much better and a bit heavier than Fanfare ........ but I will definitely re-visit as I really enjoy the band .......

Like Larry, I listened to "Fanfare & Fantasy" and "Spirit" as well, and I found myself underwhelmed. Yes, they do that IQ, Pendragon, Marillion style, which is very British (and quite awesome normally), and they do it really by the book - but there's nothing wow'ing me about them, and his vocals are really a hit or miss. On that song you put on here ("The Cause") his voice is great because he is telling a story, and you can clearly hear every word, but in other places his voice borderline annoys me. I think this is one of those bands that if they came on randomly I wouldn't skip the song, but I wouldn't go seek out the next tune to play.
